Palliative Care in Cameroon: A Compassionate Guide for Families Facing Serious Illness

Palliative Care in Cameroon

There are conversations that families in Cameroon have quietly, around kitchen tables or after church on Sundays — about a parent whose cancer has progressed, a sibling whose kidneys are failing, a husband who is no longer responding to treatment.

These conversations are hard. And they often lead to the same question: what do we do now?

Palliative care exists precisely for that moment.

In this article, we want to demystify palliative care in Cameroon — what it really means, what it offers patients and families, and why accessing it is one of the most loving decisions you can make.

What Is Palliative Care — And What It Is NOT

Palliative care is specialised medical care focused on providing relief from the pain, symptoms, and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family.

Here is what palliative care is NOT:

  • It is not giving up on a patient
  • It is not only for the final days of life
  • It is not the same as doing nothing

In fact, palliative care can begin at the same time as treatment. A patient receiving chemotherapy at a hospital in Yaoundé or Douala can also receive palliative care support to manage pain, nausea, and anxiety.

The World Health Organization estimates that 40 million people need palliative care every year — yet in sub-Saharan Africa, access remains extremely limited. In Cameroon, this gap is real, and it is something we are working to change.

What Does Palliative Care Look Like in Practice?

For families in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, home-based palliative care is often the most practical and dignified option. This is what it typically involves:

Pain and symptom management

Trained nurses visit regularly to assess pain levels, administer or supervise medication, and adjust care as the patient’s condition changes. No one should suffer unnecessarily.

Emotional and psychological support

Serious illness takes an emotional toll — on the patient, and on the entire family. Our palliative care team offers a listening ear, guidance, and where needed, referrals to counselling support.

Family education

We teach family members how to support their loved one at home — from proper positioning to prevent bedsores, to recognising signs that need immediate medical attention.

Coordination of care

We work alongside doctors, hospitals, and specialists to ensure that the patient’s overall care plan is consistent and that nothing falls through the cracks.

The Reality of Palliative Care in Cameroon

In many parts of Cameroon, families are navigating serious illness without professional guidance. Patients come home from hospital with limited support, families improvise, and pain is often undertreated because the right medication isn’t available or families don’t know they can ask for it.

There is also, in some communities, a cultural hesitation around the word ‘palliative’ — a fear that calling for this kind of care means admitting defeat. We understand that hesitation. But we want to offer a different perspective.

Choosing palliative care is choosing to prioritise your loved one’s comfort and dignity. It is choosing to make the time they have as peaceful and meaningful as possible. It is an act of love.

When Should You Start Thinking About Palliative Care?

The earlier, the better. You don’t need to wait until a patient is in crisis. Palliative care support can be introduced as soon as a serious diagnosis is made — whether that’s cancer, heart failure, advanced kidney disease, or another life-limiting condition.

If you are caring for someone in Limbe, Buea, Tiko, or nearby communities and you are unsure whether palliative care is appropriate, reach out to us. We will have an honest conversation with you, free of any pressure.
